Popovers

Popovers - A Pearl Kind of Girl

Popovers - A Pearl Kind of GirlPopovers - A Pearl Kind of GirlPopovers - A Pearl Kind of Girl

Growing up in Dallas, my favorite childhood memory was going to Neiman Marcus with my Grandmother and her sister, to enjoy popovers, strawberry butter, and warm broth. For years I have tried to recreate the famous popovers I enjoy so much, but have had plenty of batches that never “popped”. I seem to have the best results when my milk is warm, eggs are at room temperature, the batter rests an hour and the oven is piping hot. It might seem like a tedious process, but I promise the results are well worth it! To create strawberry butter I mix softened butter and a little no sugar added strawberry jam in a food processor. I have tried using fresh strawberries and frozen strawberries but the best results are when the butter is mixed with jam. My next popover adventure will be figuring out how the Polo Bar created caramelized onion and gruyere popovers. Enjoy! xoxo

Print Popover Recipe.

3 1/2 cups milk, warmed

4 cups flour

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon baking powder

6 large eggs, room temperature

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Warm milk in the microwave for 2 minutes. Sift flour, salt, and baking powder in a large bowl.

Beat eggs with an electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment on medium speed for about 3 minutes. Eggs should be foamy and pale in color. Turn down the mixer to low and add warm milk. Gradually add the dry mixture and beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes. Let batter rest for 1 hour at room temperature.

Spray Teflon-lined popover pan with nonstick spray. Fill the popover cups just slightly below the top with batter, place the popover pan on top of a cookie sheet, and transfer to the oven. After 15 minutes of baking at 450 degrees, turn the oven temperature to 375 degrees and bake for another 30 to 35 minutes. Popovers should be a deep golden brown color on the outside and airy on the inside. Serve popovers hot with strawberry butter.

Velvet and Leather

When I started seeing velvet appear in stores for fall, I was a little hesitant to purchase any. I tried on this tank and skirt together in J.Crew and loved it. I knew that velvet and leather would be the perfect combo to introduce the trend into my wardrobe. This velvet tank fits true to size (wearing a small) and also comes in light pink and blue green. The velvet pairs perfectly with this pleated leather skirt from J.Crew, but also looks great with denim. This skirt fits a little large (wearing a 0, but a 00 would have fit better) and is a midi length. As it gets colder outside, this skirt also pairs well with a black turtleneck or a velvet jacket. To complete my look I added my favorite black leather pumps, a classic black leather bucket bag (similar), and black tassel earrings. Shop this entire outfit below! xoxo

Perfect Plaid

Happy October! Dallas finally had a small cool front last week that helped get me in the mood for fall. One of my favorite things to wear during fall is plaid. I found this black and white plaid button-down at Nordstrom, and it is already the perfect plaid top for the season. Since this flannel is a boyfriend cut, it is suppose to fit larger and be less tailored. I am wearing a size small, which is perfectly oversized, and great for layering. Even though this button down is 100% cotton, it is super thick and much warmer than expected. I paired the black and white plaid with my favorite distressed black jeans and went with black leather accessories. This plaid top would also look great untucked, with leather leggings, and boots in the winter. Shop the entire look below, and happy fall! xoxo

Colorful Skirt for Fall

edit-2838edit-2959edit-2800edit-2952edit-2961edit-2853

Top: Equipment // Skirt: J.Crew // Shoes: Charles David (similar) // Bag: Neiman Marcus (similar) // Sunnies: Karen Walker // Pearls: Tiffany and Co.

A few months ago I shared this white lace skirt that I found on sale at J.Crew, and how I was able to easily pair it with my favorite Equipment blouse for summer. Since summer is over, and Labor day has passed, it is time to put away the white lace and find something better suited for fall. The sale section at J.Crew is one of my favorite places to shop, especially when they are running an additional discount. I came across this colorful skirt in the sale section at J.Crew, and knew it would be a great transition piece into fall. Normally I would not go for something this colorful, but since the skirts pattern is on top of a black background, I decided it was still suitable for fall and possibly winter. I also love the way the skirt fits perfectly at the waist, and has a zipper up the back (I am wearing a size 0). I also love the pockets that are hidden between the pleats, and the slight flare of the skirt. Since this skirt has almost an identical fit to the previous white lace skirt, I was able to pair it with the same Equipment blouse, pearls, and similar pumps. When the weather finally feels like fall in Dallas (or just gets below 80 degrees) this skirt would also pair well with a long sleeve silk blouse or a tight fitting turtle neck. Since the length of the skirt hits at about the knees, I recommend wearing pumps instead of flats to give length back to the legs. Shop the entire look below, and be sure to check out all of J.Crew’s sale items! xoxo

Black Slip Dress for a Night Out

edit-1950edit-1646edit-1783edit-1820edit-1805edit-1661edit-1796edit-1450

Dress: Topshop // Jacket: Nordstrom // Scarf: Zara // Shoes: Charles David // Earrings: BaubleBar // Clutch: Elements Dallas // Sunnies: Karen Walker

Last week I shared this versatile black slip dress, and how I like to style it for the day as well as for the evening. The third way I like to style this simple slip dress is for a night out. The length and lightweight material of this dress makes it easy to wear with almost any shoe including these black leather pumps. To tie in the pumps I added this faux leather moto jacket from Nordstrom (also comes in a beautiful olive green). I am wearing a size small in the jacket and the sleeves are a bit longer than I would like, but I could easily wear a sweater under the jacket. I dressed up this look with my favorite statement earrings from BaubleBar, a star patterned neck scarf, and a beaded clutch from Elements on Lovers Lane in Dallas. These earrings are an easy way to dress up any look and do not pull on my ears. They also come in mint, white, and yellow. I am loving the scarf trend right now, and found some cute (and affordable) options at Zara, such as this black and white star scarf. Shop everything from this look below! xoxo
