Sugar Cookies

Growing up, we didn’t have a set tradition of baking specific cookies for Santa. We usually left Santa whatever cookies we had baked last because at Christmas the cookie jar was never left empty. Rarely did we bake sugar cookies though, because most of my family, myself included, did not have the patience to chill, cut, and ice sugar cookies. While this recipe for sugar cookies does require an hour of chilling, it is otherwise relatively quick to bake. The dough is easy to mix and cut, and topping with colored sugar significantly cut down the time from measuring to eating. Enjoy! xoxo

1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

1 cup sugar

1 egg, room temperature

1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon almond extract

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

Mix room temperature butter and sugar until just combined. Add in room temperature egg, vanilla, and almond extract, beating well. Scrape the sides of the bowl and add salt and flour, beating well for about 1 minute. Form dough into a flat disk, wrap it in plastic and refrigerate for at least one hour.
On a floured surface, roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness and carefully cut out shapes. Tip, dip your cookie cutter in flour between cutting out cookies to prevent the dough from sticking to the cutter.  Sprinkle cookies with colored sugar, or leave plain to ice after. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the edges are just golden brown. Transfer cookies to a wire rack and allow them to cool completely before frosting.

Favorite Christmas Movies

Favorite Christmas Movies - A Pearl Kind of Girl

I cant think of anything better than cuddling up in flannel pajamas, with Winston, next to the Christmas tree and watching a classic Christmas movie! Earlier this year I shared my Quarantine Approved Movie List and since we are still in a global pandemic (boo) I am expanding my list. I started listing out my favorite Christmas movies and quickly realized I only like Christmas movies prior to 2006 (whoops). Maybe it is because I watched these movies as a kid, but my list of Favorite Christmas Movies really makes me seem an old lady. If you have a hard time finding these older movies  Vudu has most for free with ads and Reelgood is a great source to find where to stream. Please share your favorite and hopefully more recent Christmas movies so I can check them out! xoxo

M&M Cookies

M&M Cookies - A Pearl Kind of Girl M&M Cookies - A Pearl Kind of Girl M&M Cookies - A Pearl Kind of Girl

M&M cookies are my all-time favorite type of cookie! While I really love just about any kind of cookie, for as long as I can remember I have been especially fond of M&M. I love using the seasonal M&M colors to turn this classic cookie into a festive dessert. I especially love the Christmas and the Valentine’s Day M&M colors, but Halloween, Fourth of July, and Easter have some great seasonal M&Ms as well. After perfecting my Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe, I started experimenting with the addition of M&Ms. There were many iterations of M&M cookies, but I found that when I use a 1-inch cookie scoop, 6 M&Ms placed in a flower pattern is the perfect ratio. This way you have a bite of M&M with every bite of the cookie. My Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe has proven to be a great base for many variations of cookies and it works particularly well for M&M.  Enjoy! xoxo

1/2 cup softened butter

1 cup brown sugar

3 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 egg

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 3/4 cups flour

1 bag of Regular M&M’s

Cream the butter with sugar until fluffy.

Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.

Combine and sift all dry ingredients, then beat into the butter mixture.

Use a cookie scoop to place dough on a cookie sheet about an inch apart.

Place 6 M&M’s on each cookie in a flower shape.

Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes. I use a convection oven, and they are done in 8 minutes.

Makes about 2 dozen cookies.

Christmas Table

Christmas Table - A Pearl Kind of Girl Christmas Table - A Pearl Kind of Girl snowflake napkin ringsSetting the tableChristmas place setting

Somehow we were lucky enough to not host any major holidays this year (woohoo), and are only having immediate family over for a Christmas meal. Just like my Thanksgiving table, I set our Christmas table with a simple white and gold color pallet. We are still in the process of finding a buffet and artwork (harder than I thought it would be) so I try to keep our table settings as simple as the room. I set the table with the same white linen place mats, chippendale sliver and French provincial china that I used at Thanksgiving and Easter. I added these glass Christmas trees, snowflake napkin rings and snowflake place card holders to bring in the Christmas spirit. I love these glass Christmas trees, because even when the table is not set for dinner, they help fill the space. I debated ordering these napkins from Williams-Sonoma, but I decided on  the gold snowflake napkin rings, because they can also be used for a New Year’s Eve dinner. Christmas Decor

A Pearl Kind of Girl - Christmas Decor

I usually have a strict “after Thanksgiving” rule for Christmas decor, but since Thanksgiving was so late this year my rule went out the window. I may or may not have decorated the first weekend of November (whoops). I just love when my house is decorated for Christmas, the tree and lights just add so much joy to our space. Some of my favorite decor pieces are these beautiful stockings from Horchow, this prelight garland and these modern ornaments. When shopping for seasonal decor, I try to buy things that I will still like in 10 or 20 years. Somethings will have to be changed out as time goes on, but I love the idea of our decor being a part of our Christmas traditions. Shop my Christmas decor and Christmas decor for all styles below! xoxo

Last Minute Gifts in Dallas

Last Minute Gifts in Dallas - A Pearl Kind of Girl

Christmas is just a week away and unless you have Amazon Prime, shipping is practically out of the question. To help you out if you are in a pinch for a great gift, I have listed some of my favorite last minute gifts in Dallas (sorry if you do not live here).

NorthPark Center gold is the perfect gift for anyone on your list. Your recipient can use the gold anywhere in NorthPark Center (including restaurants) to buy anything they need. It is also a bit more unique than your average gift card, because instead of a plastic gift card this comes in gold coins. Visit the concierge next to Neiman Marcus, across from Eiseman Jewelry to purchase NorthPark gold.

Sugarfina candy makes a great gift for both children and adults. It is a perfect stocking stuffer, or a hostess gift. Sugarfina locations: NorthPark Center, Legacy West, also available at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Swoozies.

Williams-Sonoma peppermint bark is one of my favorite holiday treats. A tin of this peppermint bark is the perfect hostess gift. Williams-Sonoma locations: NorthPark Center, Preston Park Village, Stonebrair Center, and Southlake Town Square.

Anthropologie has Capri Blue Volcano candles in all sizes and colors. They are one of my favorite and affordable candles that will fill any space with a subtile fragrance. Anthropologie locations: NorthPark Center, Shops at Willowbend, Southlake Town Square, and Highland Park Village.

J.Crew has a great selection of cashmere sweaters for both men and women that would be the perfect gift under the tree. J.Crew locations: West Village, NorthPark Center, Shops at Willowbend, Southlake Town Square, Dallas Galleria, and Legacy West.

Drybar has great gifts for the girl who likes to pamper herself. Either a gift card to get a blow out, or a gift set for an at home blowout are sure to be a hit under the tree. Drybar locations: NorthPark Center, Shops at Legacy, Grapevine, and Highland Park.

The Art of Shaving has gifts for the sophisticated guy in your life. Either a gift card for a shave, or a kit to let him try a variety of products at home will always make a great grift. Art of Shaving locations: NorthPark Center, Dallas Galleria, Shops at Willowbend, and Stonebriar Center.
Giving the gift of an experience is the perfect gift for those on your list who already have everything they need. Some of my favorite experience gifts include tickets to the Dallas Symphony, cooking classes at Sur la Table, concert tickets, and tickets to see their favorite Dallas sports team (even though Dallas is not doing well this year). Hope you are able to wrap up all your shopping before Christmas Eve and have a wonderful holiday with family and friends! xoxo
