Plaid Dress

Plaid Dress - A Pearl Kind of Girl Pleated skirtPlaid Dress - A Pearl Kind of Girl bow necktiePlaid Dress - A Pearl Kind of Girl

I usually avoid patterned material and opt for solid colors, but Christmas is the one time of year when all I want to buy is plaid! The past few years I have worn plaid skirts for Christmas and this year I am on the hunt for a simple plaid dress. J. Crew has a fantastic selection of plaid pieces, per usual, and I just loved this long sleeved, bow necktie plaid dress.

This dress fits true to size (wearing a 0) and the fitted waist is very flattering. I love the fact that this dress has sleeves and a pleated skirt. I am also a huge sucker for a bow necktie on a blouse or dress. When I bought this dress online I was that it was called “black watch tartan” and I assumed that the dress had black in it. The darker color in this plaid dress is actually navy, which shows more prominently in person. In the summertime a little navy wouldn’t bother me, but most of my winter shoes and handbags are black so I am not loving the added navy in the plaid. I paired this dress with my favorite strappy heels and gold hoop earrings (both old but I linked similar products below). Shop my look below! xoxo

Black Silk Button Down

Blouse: Everlane // Jeans: Paige // Booties: Marc Fisher // Sunnies: Karen Walker

A few weeks ago I shared this black crew sweater from the Everlane collection at Nordstrom. Well, I ended up buying just about everything that came in black from the Everlane collection! I mentioned that we cleaned out our closet and for fall/winter were focusing more on staple pieces. This black silk button down blouse is such a great staple and was the perfect addition to my simplified closet. It fits true to size, but I ordered a size up (wearing a 2) so it would be a bit oversized. It comes in 5 colors and I already have the white version sitting in my cart for checkout. I paired it with my favorite raw edge jeans, but this black silk button down pairs well with skirts too. You will see this button down a lot during the holidays tucked into a plaid skirt! Long Black Cardigan

Cardigan: J.Crew // Top: Cloth & Stone (similar) // Jeans: Paige // Booties: Jeffery Campbell // Bag: STAUD

I was supposed to be looking for a Halloween costume (which I still don’t have) when I found this long black cardigan. I think at this point I have just given up on a Halloween costume and plan to wear this cardigan with a black turtleneck, black jeans and black booties… that is festive enough, right?

I own a similar short version of this cardigan in multiple colors and was excited to see a longer option for winter. This cardigan fits large, so I recommend buying a size down (wearing XS). It comes in seven colors and I already have my eye on the burgundy, heather khaki, ivory and heather cilantro colors. I paired this long black cardigan with my favorite white button down (similar), Paige jeans and Jeffery Campbell booties. This cardigan also pairs well with a turtleneck and with a knee length skirt or dress. Shop this entire look below! xoxo

Black Crew Sweater

Sweater: Everlane for Nordstrom // Jeans: Paige // Booties: Jeffery Campbell // Bag: STAUD

After transitioning our closets to fall/winter and throwing away sacks full of old clothes, it was time to buy some new pieces. I came across the Everlane collection at Nordstrom and had to resist from literally buying it all! Every piece of the Everlane collection is what I would consider classic staples. This black crew sweater is one of my favorite pieces of the collection and it fits true to size (wearing small). It is the perfect blend of recycled cashmere and merino wool. This sweater comes in five colors and I already have the Heather Sand and Bone colors in my cart. I paid the black crew sweater with my favorite black neoprene booties from Jeffery Campbell and raw edge jeans from Paige. This sweater layers and pairs so well with just about anything. Burgundy Pleated Skirt

Sweater: Vince (similar) // Skirt: J.Crew // Heels: Banana Republic (similar) // Bag: STAUD

This week the high in Dallas is expected to only reach the high 80s and it is finally starting to feel like fall! As much as I love the 100 degree heat we have been having, I am also ready to buy pumpkins for my front porch. I started to slowly transition to my closet to fall with pieces like this burgundy pleated skirt.

I shared this burgundy pleated skirt in black a last year, but could not resist this color for fall. J.Crew now offers this skirt in blush, emerald, navy and light blue as well. This skirt fits right at the waist and runs a little large (wearing 00). I love how the pleats are flat at the waist, so the skirt lays nicely without flaring too much. I paired this skirt with an old favorite Vince sweater (similar), black heels (similar) and a STAUD handbag. Top 5 Closet Staples

Top 5 Closet Staples - A Pearl Kind of Girl close up of handbagbackside of sweatercloseup of crew neck teecrew neck tee tucked into skinny jeansTop 5 Closet Staples - A Pearl Kind of Girl Top 5 Closet Staples - A Pearl Kind of Girl

Tee: J.Crew // Sweater: J.Crew // Jeans: Paige // Mules: Vince // Sunnies: Karen Walker // Earrings: Anthropologie (similar)

Let’s be honest, most people would probably find my closet incredibly boring. When I go shopping I get much more excited over a basic white tee than something like a hot pink suede jacket. The key to any well stocked closet starts with staples like great jeans and accessories. You have probably seen me wear all the pieces of the outfit photographed above throughout my blog posts. I consider these skinny jeans, crew neck tee, oversized sunnies, neutral heels and gold hoops to be my top 5 closet staples. Of course my top 10 staples would include things like a black dress and blazer, but my top 5 closet staples are the pieces that I find most practical for daily wear. I have linked multiple styles and price ranges for each item below! xoxo

Skinny Jeans – I love the way Paige jeans fit me, especially the Hoxton cut. They run true to size (wearing a 24) and the material has just the right amount of stretch without stretching out too much. I also have multiple pair of J.Crew jeans in the Toothpick cut and they also fit true to size (wear a 25).

Crew Neck Tee – Everyone should find a crew neck tee they love and buy every color. A simple tee is the perfect piece to layer under a blazer or tuck into a skirt or high waited jeans. I found this crew neck tee at J.Crew and the price was so great I left with it in 5 colors. This tee fits true to size and is the perfect balance between tight fitting and oversized (wearing a small).

Oversized Sunnies – Alex surprised me with these Karen Walker sunnies a few years ago and I don’t think I have taken them off since. I had an old similar pair from Urban Outfitters, but fell in love with the shape and quality of the Karen Walker version. A strong pair of oversized sunnies quickly elevates any outfit and of course helps protect your eyes from sun damage.

Neutral Heels – Throw on a pair of neutral heels and I promise your legs will look twice as long. I think you should really have a couple pairs of neutral heels (close toed, open toe, strappy) but these Vince mules are a great pair to start with. I love how easily they pair with jeans or a skirt or dress. They fit true to size (wearing an 8) and are super comfortable. I also love these Marc Fisher closed toe pumps and Calvin Klein low mules.

Gold Hoops – Before I found these thin octagon hoops at Anthropologie, I wore studs daily. Actually I really avoided hoops because I thought most were too big and tacky. The simplicity of these hoops makes them great for daily wear without being as boring as a pair of studs. I also really love this pair of hoops, but I tend to wear them more as statement earrings.
